My 2017 Year Review

This year was a year of working my shadows.

It was a winter.

I lost some incredible people over the last year and a half – that’s been painful and I haven’t had much experience in dealing with that kind of hurt.

But through that pain there’s been a huge amount of growth. I know myself more deeply than I ever have before and I’ve built stronger relationships with the people who are still in my life.

From this experience I’ve also picked up a variety of skills and tools that can help others touch the darkness and come out the other side.

I’m very grateful for 2017 but am happy it’s come to an end.

My First Year Plan

This was also the first year I created and stuck with a year plan with a lot of consistency.

Because of that, I’m still dialing in ways to measure my progress efficiently.

There was a three month period at the end of the year where I didn’t pay much attention planning or reviewing my plans and instead just went with the flow.

As a result, the final analysis of some my accomplishments may be off.

Physical Fitness Accomplishments

  • Completed my morning routine well over 150 times
  • Cleaned up my diet slowly but surely – removed processed foods, fried foods, dairy, and refined carbs

  • Won 1st place in the white belt division of my second BJJ tournament

Challenges, Struggles, and Failures:

  • Failed to break completely free of my disempowering habit of pornography use – although massive progress has been made
  • Didn’t take time to mourn the loss of my brother that I needed
  • In the end my heart said it was time to move on and I ended my relationship with Kelly
  • Failed to keep a detailed account of my accomplishments in 2017
  • Didn’t have much motivation or drive throughout much of 2017
  • Ate way too much crappy food throughout the year
  • Failed to generate much income at all through personal development coaching
  • Didn’t have as many clear goals as I would have liked throughout the year
  • Wasn’t as consistent with checking in and planning my weeks effectively as I would have like to
  • Didn’t develop a team and delegate like I would like to
  • Did not spend my money in a controlled manner
  • Failed to set and maintain a balanced budget
  • Didn’t keep up on my vehicle maintenance like I would like to
  • Didn’t get signed up for health insurance through the state or my work at Trader Joes
  • Didn’t sign up or complete a 10-day meditation retreat like I had planned

Top Lessons and Breakthroughs

  • Started the year without a strong team of people to support me during hard times – I have that now
  • Ended a relationship that wasn’t serving myself or my partner. Was extremely difficult, but knew it was the right move.
  • I have the choice to be happy or the choice to be miserable. With practice I can move into happiness and growth and optimism on a neurological level.
  • Strenuous activity is absolutely vital for me to operate at my highest levels
  • Sometimes the work is taking a break from the work – mourning, relaxing, and letting time heal wounds
  • In order to do what I want to do with my business I am going to have to act as an operator and not try to do everything my self
  • I have work to do on being more assertive and staying in my power

Overall 2017 was an incredibly insightful year.

I grew more in the last year and a half than I ever thought possible.

This was a year of self exploration and self understanding.

A chance to step into the darker parts of myself and find peace, empathy, and self acceptance.

Through this transformative process I’ve gained countless tools and personal revelations that I will use to understand myself and others more deeply.

On a lighter note, I’ve met some absolutely amazing people here in LA and look forward to getting to know them in the coming years.

I moved to a new state, ended a relationship, and got back into BJJ.

I got came through a hard winter and now it’s time to start planting new seeds for an incredible summer harvest.

That was 2017 in a nutshell for me. How about you? What were some of your major accomplishments in 2017? What did you learn? Share it in the Transcendence Effect Facebook Group!
